An artist has no need to express his thought directly in his work for the latter to reflect its quality; it has even been said that the highest praise of God consists in the denial of Him by the atheist who finds creation so perfect that it can dispense with a creator.

The Grammarian and the Sailor

An arrogant linguist boarded a ship. He asked the sailor, “O sailor, do you know any grammar?” When the other replied in the negative, he said with contempt, “What a pity-you have spent half of your life in vain.” This made the sailor sad, but he kept quiet. After a while, a terrible storm broke out and the ship began to sink. The sailor asked the now-frantic linguist, “O grammarian, do you know how to swim?” This time, the linguist replied in the negative. Then the sailor said “What a pity - for it means that you will lose your entire life!”

Islam has long history downtown: Why the ‘Ground Zero mosque’ belongs in lower Manhattan

But no matter how offensive their presence may be to some people, Muslims have always been a part of lower Manhattan‘s past. In fact, Islam in New York began near Ground Zero. From an historical perspective, there could hardly be a better place for a mosque.

Radiohead - All I Need [live From the Basement]

The heart of man has been so constituted by the Almighty that, like a flint, it contains a hidden fire which is evoked by music and harmony, and renders man beside himself with ecstasy. These harmonies are echoes of that higher world of beauty which we call the world of spirits; they remind man of his relationship to that world, and produce in him an emotion so deep and strange that he himself is powerless to explain it. The effect of music and dancing is deeper in proportion as the natures on which they act are simple and prone to emotion; they fan into a flame whatever love is already dormant in the heart, whether it be earthly and sensual, or divine and spiritual.

iPhone 4 – Holding Technique

The iPhone 4 is a special phone. So special, Apple requires you to grip it in a special way so as to not drop your calls. If you don’t grip the special phone in the special way, your punishment is disconnection!

Unfortunately, I’m not special, because I can hold my Blackberry however I like but it never loses the network signal.

See here for Steve Jobs’s iPhone 4 holding technique.

Disclaimer: I’m not an Apple hater. I prefer Apple products to PC’s and Microsoft. I own two Mac computers. I even had the Apple Newton, seriously (and, I was too young to have any use for it. I go hard). I’m just not a member of the cult, which gives me the privilege of exercising free thought.

Earthquake in Toronto? Why not?

In 2007, I experienced a 6.3 earthquake in Kampala, Uganda, close to sunrise. The epicenter was in Juba, southern Sudan. The quake woke me from my sleep, I was disoriented and couldn’t find the opening of the mosquito net around my bed. I could actually hear the earth ‘roaring’ if you will, and the walls of my flat were swaying back and forth. As soon as the earth settled, every Masjid in Kampala started calling the Adhan for Fajr salat (morning prayer). The Muezzins, dozens of them scattered throughout the city made the call without any panic or hesitation in their voices.  It was surreal. In the natural order, we’re fragile transient beings, here for only a moment. No matter how minimal the earthquake was or how over-exaggerated some reactions have been to it, these are moments to reflect.

Kurupt Feat. Pete Rock – “Yessir”

Kurupt, the indomitable Dogg Pound battle emcee drops his next video featuring production by Pete Rock. My opinions on Hip Hop are often controversial but regardless of what anyone says, I put Kurupt in my ‘Top 10′ emcees of all time. He still represents a generation of emcees that struck fear into the hearts of the lay person, a non-pinup rapper, the anti-hero. The way it should be.

Despite the Israeli Government’s thorough efforts to confiscate all footage taken during the attack, Iara Lee was able to retain her video recordings. Above, is the unedited footage from the moments leading up to and during the Israeli commandos’ assault on the Mavi Marmara.
